Platte River Power Authority (PRPA) is a not-for-profit public power utility that provides electricity to four cities in Northern Colorado: Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park, and Longmont. PRPA was established in 1973, and since then, it has been committed to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its customers.

One of the ways PRPA has been fulfilling its commitment to sustainability is by developing renewable energy projects. The utility has been investing in wind, solar, and hydroelectric power to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint.

Wind Energy

PRPA has been a pioneer in wind energy development in Colorado. In 1998, the utility built its first wind turbine at the Medicine Bow Wind Project in Wyoming. Since then, PRPA has added more wind turbines to its portfolio, and today, it has a total of 162 MW of wind energy capacity.

PRPA's wind energy portfolio includes the Medicine Bow Wind Project, the Rawhide Flats Wind Energy Center, and the Roundhouse Renewable Energy Project. The Medicine Bow Wind Project is located in Wyoming and consists of 69 wind turbines that generate 50 MW of electricity. The Rawhide Flats Wind Energy Center is located in Wyoming and Colorado and consists of 30 wind turbines that generate 60 MW of electricity. The Roundhouse Renewable Energy Project is located in Wyoming and consists of 14 wind turbines that generate 52 MW of electricity.

PRPA's wind energy projects not only provide clean energy but also support the local economy. The construction and operation of these projects have created jobs and generated revenue for the communities where they are located.

Solar Energy

PRPA has also been investing in solar energy to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint. The utility has a total of 22 MW of solar energy capacity, which is enough to power more than 4,000 homes.

PRPA's solar energy portfolio includes the Rawhide Flats Solar Project and the Coyote Ridge Solar Project. The Rawhide Flats Solar Project is located in Larimer County, Colorado, and consists of 30,000 solar panels that generate 8 MW of electricity. The Coyote Ridge Solar Project is located in Weld County, Colorado, and consists of 40,000 solar panels that generate 14 MW of electricity.

PRPA's solar energy projects not only provide clean energy but also support the local economy. The construction and operation of these projects have created jobs and generated revenue for the communities where they are located.

Hydroelectric Power

PRPA has also been investing in hydroelectric power to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint. The utility has a total of 7 MW of hydroelectric power capacity, which is enough to power more than 1,000 homes.

PRPA's hydroelectric power portfolio includes the Green Mountain Power Plant and the Marys Lake Power Plant. The Green Mountain Power Plant is located in Larimer County, Colorado, and generates 2.6 MW of electricity. The Marys Lake Power Plant is located in Estes Park, Colorado, and generates 4.4 MW of electricity.

PRPA's hydroelectric power projects not only provide clean energy but also support the local economy. The construction and operation of these projects have created jobs and generated revenue for the communities where they are located.

Conclusion

PRPA has been committed to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its customers. The utility has been investing in wind, solar, and hydroelectric power to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint. PRPA's renewable energy projects not only provide clean energy but also support the local economy. The construction and operation of these projects have created jobs and generated revenue for the communities where they are located. PRPA's renewable energy projects are a testament to the utility's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for Northern Colorado.
